Baltic nations pool efforts to support air-policing mission
Defence ministers from the Baltic states who met in Tallinn, Estonia, on 16 December decided to form collective air-policing support capabilities, abandoning the previous policy of using individual national contributions and budget allocations to facilitate NATO's Baltic air policing operations.
The news means that future procurement projects will be carried out collectively across all three Baltic states. The programme is to include instruction, ground support and servicing as well as information and communications components.
"NATO airspace is unified and I am glad that NATO allies are prepared jointly to ensure the security of the common airspace in our area," Estonian Defence Minister Jaak Aaviksoo explained. "It is our mission to ensure that the Baltic states should have the best training and support services for our allies who have the resources to ensure our air policing," he added. "We have come to a mutual understanding about this with our colleagues in the Baltic states."
